The Oregon Tea Party PAC has made a foray into presidential politics in the all important 2016 election cycle. It’s an interesting endorsement in many ways. The process, the candidate, and the reasoning all signal a mature and deliberate analysis of the issues at hand, and the right candidate to handle the job.
A group of around a dozen stakeholders has been having high level conversations since late 2014 regarding the issues and candidates involved in the 2016 race for the White House. Vigorous and respectful, the debates have been at times very passionate while remaining collegial. The pros and cons of many candidates – Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, Donald Trump, along with the insider picks like Jeb Bush, Chris Christie and Marco Rubio – were considered at length.
In the end, though, one candidate emerged. What is remarkable is the unanimity of the decision from the leadership group of OTP PAC. From all walks of life, and with many different perspectives, each stakeholder eventually arrived at the same conclusion.
As they state in their announcement,
A man and candidate of principle, intelligence, integrity and conviction, Ted Cruz is the kind of candidate we have not seen since the days of Ronald Reagan; a man whom conservative warrior Andrew Breitbart referred to as the future leader of the conservative movement.
The American Tea Party Movement has always been about the people and for the people, not the progressive special interests in each party. Ted Cruz represents the culmination of the Tea Party movement with his steadfast dedication to the American 1st Principles that we fight so hard for and that keep us free: limited constitutional government, fiscal responsibility, and free market economic liberty. His commitment to adhering to the constitution and the founders’ vision is unparalleled.
The consistency of principles over party has always been important to the Oregon Tea Party. This is why OTP PAC has spent as much time calling out Republicans who, in the words of Margaret Thatcher, “go all wobbly on us”, as they have attacking disastrous Democratic policies and policymakers.
In the end, there was only one candidate that Oregon Tea Party judged to adhere to strict constitutional principles. One man who is dedicated to resisting the calls for Republicans to compromise their principles. One man who is willing to take on the establishment in either party to advance conservative solutions in the face of calls for cronyism and big government.
That man is Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
