It was a horrific attack by a conscienceless, crazed gunman on innocent moviegoers, including children. Sadly, the theater was a “gun free zone,” and the unarmed victims had no way to stop him or defend themselves.
A gunman in a gas mask and body armor killed 12 people at a midnight premiere of the new “Batman” movie in a suburb of Denver early on Friday, opening fire on moviegoers after hurling a gas canister into the theater.
Armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, he wounded another 59 with gunfire during a screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” at a mall in Aurora, which turned into a chaotic scene of bleeding victims, horrified screams and pleas for help, witnesses said.
The suspect, identified by police as James Eagan Holmes, 24, also booby-trapped his Aurora apartment with what appeared to be sophisticated explosives, creating a potential hazard for law-enforcement and bomb squad officers who swarmed to the scene.
He is due to make his first court appearance on Monday.
Authorities evacuated five nearby buildings and created a perimeter of several blocks as they planned to detonate the suspected explosives with a robot, a fire official said.
Arriving on the scene within 90 seconds of the first emergency calls, police immediately took the suspect into custody in a parking lot behind the cinema, where he surrendered without a fight, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said.
Witnesses reported bloody chaos with dazed victims bleeding from bullet holes, spitting up blood and crying for help.
“I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, ‘We need to go, get up,’ and there was no response, so I presumed she was dead,” said Tanner Coon, 17. “I went toward the exit, waited in the exit for my friends and saw a guy with blood across his face and shoulders, and just got out of the movie theater.”
Hours after mass murder at a 12am showing of the new Batman film, ABC News reporter Brian Ross went on Good Morning America and speculated that the killer could be a Tea Party member.
Ross appeared Friday morning during live coverage and told viewers, “There is a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado page on the Colorado Tea Party site as well. Talking about him joining the Tea Party last year. Now, we don’t know if this the same Jim Holmes.” Co-host George Stephanopoulos eagerly touted Ross’ accusations: “You’ve been looking- investigating the background of Jim Holmes here. You’ve found something that might be significant.”
If they had bothered to do even a basic fact check, ABC would have discovered that the man they were smearing was 52 and the suspect was 24 – CLEARLY not the same person. These people “never let a crisis go to waste” when they can twist it to attack people they disagree with. How low can they go?
Joel Pollack at Breitbart reports the reaction from ABC’s smear victim:
Breitbart News spoke to James Michael Holmes, the Tea Party member falsely identified this morning by ABC News’ Brian Ross and George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America as the possible suspect in the mass shooting early this morning at a screening of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. He is a 52-year-old Hispanic conservative who joined the Tea Party after becoming disillusioned with the Republican party.
“It was freaky,” said Holmes, describing his reaction when ABC News speculated that he was the culprit who entered a crowded theater and opened fire on dozens of innocent men, women, and children. He disconnected his telephone and says that he is worried about members of his family who might be contacted by the media.
He is now receiving threats, thanks to ABC painting a target on his back.
They put out a half-hearted apology on their website:
An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.
This was shoddy and vindictive reporting. They didn’t WANT to investigate further before wrongly naming a Tea Partier as the perpetrator. They’d rather plant the idea in people’s heads and then apologize afterwards for their “mistake.” It wasn’t a “mistake.” It was their deliberate choice to abandon their obligation as journalists to gather all the facts, preferring jump to erroneous conclusions that support their own prejudices.
Guest-hosting Rush Limbaugh’s radio show, Steyn contrasted media coverage of the Colorado shooting to the 2009 massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, committed by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan.
“Nobody ever says, ‘Where did Maj. Hasan get the ideas that made him want to stand on a table shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ and gun down a bunch of people?’” Steyn said. “That is an isolated one-off. It doesn’t have anything to do with any books he might have read or any spiritual advisers he might have listened to. That’s an entirely insulated one-off.”
[...] “But when it comes to some guy of no known political affiliation, who may have no political affiliations whatsoever, but when he decides to walk into a motion picture theater and kill a bunch of people, then the first thing that has to happen is that has to be pinned on right-wing talk radio and Fox News and all kinds of other stuff,” said Steyn. “This is pathetic. It’s abysmal. It’s not worth talking about.”
Of course, media bias isn’t the only twisted Leftist behavior on display after this tragedy. The crime scene hasn’t even been cleared yet, but the gun-grabbers are already on the march:
In the wake of Friday’s deadly shooting in Colorado, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg called on both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to get specific on how they plan to address gun violence in America.
“You know, soothing words are nice, but maybe it’s time that the two people who want to be President of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country,” Bloomberg said during an appearance on John Gambling’s radio show, the New York Observer reports.
There’s a very simple reason why these crazed gunmen choose venues like malls, theaters and schools for their shooting sprees: they know there will be plenty of unarmed sitting ducks. How differently could this have turned out if each of these victims had been armed and trained to defend themselves?
