Leave it to Obama to notch up the creep factor on what has already been a disturbing track record for encouraging citizen “reporting”, collection of personal data, and electronic harassment/intimidation techniques.
It began with the infamous “fishy list”, in which the White House encouraged supporters to report “fishy” e-mails and other “disinformation” about Obamacare to “firstname.lastname@example.org.”
Then came the Twitter spam fiasco that cost Obama over 40,000 annoyed Twitter followers in one day.
Recently, Obama has begun flooding supporters’ in-boxes with creepy e-mails inviting them to dinner (if they donate $3 and win the drawing, that is). Some of the messages have all the earmarks of a stalker.
Now we find out from Keith Koffler at White House Dossier that the Obama campaign is encouraging supporters to send donations in the name of a Republican friend or family member. Obamabots need only submit the unwitting victim’s name and e-mail address to Dear Leader, and – viola! – he or she will be sure to receive a vomit-inducing thank-you note from the Obama campaign machine. As a reward for turning over dissenters’ personal contact information without their permission, the dutiful brown shirt will be entered into another drawing for dinner at the Dear Leader’s table. It’s a win-win!
Who inspires you to give?
This holiday season, we’re giving you a chance to have a little fun at the expense of a Republican in your life by letting them know they inspired you to make a donation to the Obama campaign.
Simply enter their name and email address below. Then, we’ll send them a message letting them know they inspired you to donate.
Thank you for supporting this campaign, and happy holidays.
Important: By making a donation today, you’ll be automatically entered for a chance to have dinner with Barack and Michelle Obama. By clicking on the “Submit” button below or otherwise participating in the promotion, you agree to be bound by these Official Rules and represent that you satisfy all of the eligibility requirements.
The effort could help the Obama campaign build a database that would enable it to target Republican voters during the general election campaign. But, more perniciously, it could also become part of an Democratic effort to influence Republican primary voters to select a candidate Democrats think Obama could most easily defeat.
The Democratic National Committee last month released a video that seemed designed to damage Mitt Romney, the GOP candidate feared most by the Obama campaign.
The Obama information collection effort is cast under the mischievous guise of asking Obama supporters to “have a little fun at the expense of a Republican in your life” by signing them up to get an email from the Obama campaign ribbing them for having “inspired” the Obama supporter to donate.
The result, however, is that the Obama campaign gets a new trove of Republican email addresses that it could never have collected through voluntary submissions.
Ed Morrissey of Hot Air is of the opinion that this is more of a sick practical joke against Republicans than a sinister data mining campaign:
Basically, this says We’re jerks who want to spam unwilling recipients, so why don’t you betray your friends and help us out? Hey, if that’s what Hopeandchange looks like in 2012, well, bring it on. As campaign strategies go, it’s on par with New Coke and those Miller Lite ads that imply that men who choose other brands might be a little light in the loafers.
Either way, the Obama campaign has stooped to an unprecedentedly twisted new level. Any creepier, and you’d need a restraining order.
